I’m a Scot who now lives on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja in Boorloo (Perth, Western Australia). I’ve lived here for over 16 years after moving here for love and adventure.
My “day job” is at Health Consumers’ Council in Western Australia. There, I get to work with people who use health and social care services, and with people who work inside those services, to create positive lasting change to health and health services in this part of the world.
I’m lucky that my day job is so aligned with my personal mission which is to catalyse positive social change by connecting people and ideas with spirit and care.
As of October 2022, I’m also the Chairperson of the national Weight Issues Network. This is a health consumer-led advocacy organisation, working to eliminate weight bias and stigma, and promoting and supporting the rights and interests of people impacted by obesity and weight issues.
Other topics where I spend my energy include moving towards a wellbeing economy, reconciliation with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people on this land we now call Australia, palliative and end of life care, public sector reform, and community-led action for healthy communities.
I’ve learned that activism requires energy…
…and so I’m intentional about how I recharge and build my energy. I make time each day for some activities which fill my cup like:
- reading gripping fiction (from the online library)
- discussing big ideas with interesting people
- starting the day with a minimum of a 5 minute journalling exercise and ending the day with a reminder to myself of three things I’m grateful for/that went well (transformational – seriously!)
- pootle around with beautiful pens and stationery (or with thread in some basic embroidery)
- sometimes watch questionable TV shows that make me smile
- spend time in nature, moving joyfully
- and hang out with friends and family – ideally laughing lots.
